SPEEDMASTER FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE
On October 3, 1962, the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the first Omega watch worn in space when astronaut Walter Schirra took his personal model on the Sigma 7 mission as part of the Mercury program. This updated version pays tribute to that pioneering timepiece, reviving the same second-generation Speedmaster style with a modern touch. The 39.70 mm case is crafted from polished and brushed noble steel and features a flat-link bracelet with Omega’s patented “comfort release” adjustment system. The bezel ring is made of black aluminum and displays the legendary tachymeter scale with the iconic “Dot Over Ninety” (DON). Beneath the new hesalite-shaped sapphire crystal, the grayish-blue dial is coated with CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) to replicate the tone of some CK 2998 watches from the 1960s. It features vintage-style Super-LumiNova-filled “Alpha” hour and minute hands, along with hour markers, and a white “Baton” central seconds hand that matches the transferred markings. The subdials include a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and a small seconds display at 9 o’clock. The dial bears a vintage Omega logo, just like on the crown, while the case back showcases the famous hippocampus medallion and inscriptions reading “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.” Powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 3861, this watch is the most modern version of the Caliber 321 that astronauts wore in space. It comes in a special box that includes the LEGENDARY MOONWATCH document.
